Hey everyone, I just heard that ChatGPT’s AI search engine is now rolling out to all users starting today! OpenAI mentioned this update during their “12 days of ship-mas” livestream, and at the same time, they talked about an “optimized” version of the feature on mobile as well as the option to search using an advanced voice mode.
Previously, ChatGPT’s search engine was only available to those with paid subscriptions back in October. Now it’s coming to the free tier, though you’ll still need an account and be logged in to access it.
One cool improvement is how ChatGPT on mobile now feels more like a regular search engine. If you’re looking for a particular type of place, like restaurants or local attractions, ChatGPT will show a list of results along with images, ratings, and hours of operation. If you tap on a location, you can get more details and even view a map with directions right inside the app.
There’s another feature to speed things up when you’re searching for certain kinds of sites, such as “hotel booking websites.” Instead of generating a detailed response right away, ChatGPT will first provide links to relevant websites before taking the time to give more info on each option. Also, for those who use the Advanced Voice Mode (currently limited to paid users), ChatGPT can automatically pull the most up-to-date info from the web.
In earlier livestreams, OpenAI also introduced its text-to-image model called Sora, and on top of that, they rolled out a $200 per month ChatGPT Pro subscription. With all these changes, it seems like OpenAI is really stepping up its game, and this might seriously challenge Google’s place in the search world. What do you all think?
